Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. Thieves almost always commit this crime to steal money somehow. It is a serious crime that can cost you a lot of money, ruin your credit history, and maybe your reputation. It can take a lot of time, money, and patience to fix.

For more information on how to recognize ID theft scams, protect yourself from ID theft, and how to fix the damage caused by ID theft, visit the Federal Trade Commission's ID theft page.
