Who we are

603 Legal Aid is a private, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services to eligible, low-income people anywhere in New Hampshire.  Our attorneys and paralegals provide legal advice by telephone in the areas of the law listed below. We also provide referrals to private volunteer attorneys. Our clients' information is kept completely confidential.

Who we help

We receive support from the federal government and provide services to clients with incomes and assets below levels which are set by Congress and tied to federal poverty guidelines. We cannot provide services to people who are incarcerated.

We provide help to clients with problems in the following areas:

  • Family Domestic violence, divorce, separation, annulment, adoption, child custody, interstate custody, child support, guardianship;
  • Benefits and welfare Town and city welfare, unemployment compensation, public housing, Social Security, Medicaid, Food Stamps, disability benefits, SSI and Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF);
  • Housing Landlord/tenant disputes, eviction, foreclosure, housing discrimination, housing preservation, public housing, Section 8, and housing conditions;

If you have a problem in another area, we will do our best to direct you to someone who can assist you.

What we do

  • Legal Advice After we interview you to find out about your legal problem, we give you legal advice over the telephone, and provide you with ongoing support to represent yourself. In some cases we advocate on behalf of clients with the adverse party (for example, with the landlord or the local welfare officer). We refer many clients to other programs, as described below.
  • Referrals We refer many cases to New Hampshire Legal Assistance, the Civil Practice Clinic at Franklin Pierce Law Center, Disabilities Rights Center, State agencies and independent organizations. If you are not financially eligible for these services, we will refer you to the Lawyer Referral Services of the New Hampshire Bar Association at 603-229-0002.
  • Support and Self-Help Materials We provide self-help materials in many areas of the law, including areas in which we do not provide advice. Call for more information.

Busy Phones

We receive hundreds of calls each day. If lines are busy, please keep trying. Your call is important to us. Because we spend as much time with each caller as we need to provide as much assistance as is available, we cannot be available for every caller each day. You may be placed on hold for lengthy periods.

Our Committment

At 603 Legal Aid, we work to ensure that low income people have access to, and are provided with, quality legal services.

Non-discrimination Statement

603 Legal Aid does not discriminate against people because of their age, sex, race, creed, color, marital status, familial status, physical or mental disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or political affiliation or belief. There will be no such aforementioned discrimination in accepting or providing services, or the admission or access to, or employment at 603 Legal Aid.
